A “spokesdog?” You heard me right! Uggie, the now famous Jack Russell Terrier from “The Artist,” has teamed up with Nintendo to promote Nintendogs + Cats, for the Nintendo 3DS system. Uggie recently sat down with the folks at USA Today to participate in a Q&A. Check out what he had to say.

No I haven’t gone fishing, but admittedly took a bit of a hiatus from posting.  As I work back to finding just the right story to feature, here’s a couple recent animal tales that I stumbled upon.  LOVE THEM!!!

A warm ray of light can mean so many different things.  A sign from above; a promise of a new day; a preview of spring.  For these pets, it’s a comfort spot and just their little piece of warm.  Love it when I see lil’ Leo moving across the room as the ray of sunlight moves throughout the day.  So cute!

Got this in the mail today from the International Association of Business Communicators.  Made me take a break from work and smile, so I thought I’d pass it along to you.  Enjoy the week and keep your pets safe.  Forecasters are predicting a life-threatening blizzard for the Midwest. (Not sure I believe it will get that bad yet, but check out my winter weather tips for your pets as you keep watch out the window.)

First, let me start by saying how ironic it is that I stumbled on the Snoring Dog Studios blog today.  The blog, which was featured on the WordPress landing page, was reporting findings from a recent public health report that claimed owners should not allow their pets to sleep in their beds.  And, while we are not advocates of the situation and are working to remind (a.k.a. “re-train”) Leo that his bed is on the floor, this report gave me a good kick in the butt today.  The main reason pets shouldn’t be allowed in the bed, according to the report, is not to help humans sleep better, but rather to prevent GERMS … it actually mentions that since 1974 multiple cases of the plague have been associated with people who let their cats sleep with them.  NOTE TO SELF: Work harder to retrain Leo, even if he is super clean and bathed often.

In other news, have you heard about Subaru’s Game Day Walk event? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!  Subaru, which aligns itself with charities and organizations that have meaningful value to its target consumers, is encouraging pet lovers across the country to pledge to walk their dog on February 6.  Forget sitting on the couch, indulging in an eight-hour Super Bowl television marathon with an occasional flip to Animal Planet to check out the “Puppy Bowl’s” water-bowl time lapse camera. (Although that does sound fun too!) Consider taking your four-legged friend to the local dog park or simply get a bit of exercise after being stuck indoors all winter.

The campaign’s website currently has more than 55,000 pledges and features a dog park locator to help make things easy.  My favorite part of the site is the “Dog Tested, Dog Approved” video.

Sign up today!  My fingers are crossed that we signed up in time to receive Subaru’s free doggie gift pack.  Stay tuned …

When you first welcome a dog into the family, you find yourself setting boundaries. Things like …

  • No jumping on the couch
  • No eating off the table
  • No scratching at the door
  • No sleeping in my bed
  • No begging for snacks

And, little by little, as time goes by, the dog pushes those boundaries until they don’t exist anymore.  It seems cute and harmless at first, but is it really?

Earlier this week, I realized that ‘lil Leo has won us over so much that he’s overstepped all the boundaries we once set up.  I always said, he’ll never be allowed to sleep in our bed, but have woken up the past few weeks to find him there.  What’s happened?  Isn’t the quilt and dog bed next to the bed warm enough? Is the new comforter that I bought really just that comfy?  Is he annoyed with the light on the humidfier or the soft humming noise it makes throughout the night?

I can’t be for sure, but I am pretty confident that he waits until I’ve entered the deepest part of sleep to jump up and fall asleep next to me. Rarely do I feel him jump up … it’s just like he magically appears when the alarm goes off — butted up right against my leg.  And to top it off, he’s quick to take my spot — even laying his head on the pillow — when I do get out of bed.  (Really? A dog who knows how to use a pillow??  Perhaps it’s partially my fault, though, as I’m quick to cover him up with the blanket once he snuggles up to the pillow — It’s just too cute!)

Any tips for reversing this pattern?  I’d love to break him of this habit simply to have once small space that’s still our own.  NO PUPS ALLOWED!
